A man in a wheelchair was stabbed outside a shop in Wirral, police have said.

Merseyside Police said it was called to Hoole Road in the Woodchurch estate just after 15:40 BST to reports a man in his 60s had been attacked.

The victim was treated at the scene for stab wounds to his shoulder and ribs before being taken to hospital.

Armed officers later arrested a 40-year-old man from Noctorum on suspicion of wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

The force said the area would have been busy at the time of the attack and urged witnesses to come forward.

'Swift arrest'

Det Insp Andy Schofield said: "An investigation is underway after a man has suffered a serious injury on Hoole Road as a result of the offender's actions, and is getting the care he needs in hospital.

"Although our officers have made a swift arrest just hours after the assault, we are appealing to anyone who was on Hoole Road at around 15:40 to get in touch with police.

"At the time of this incident, it would have been busy with people coming home from work or visiting shops in the area so please contact us if you saw what happened."

Road closures were expected to remain in place into the evening.
