Man jailed for more than 10 years for raping woman

A man who raped and assaulted a woman in Stoke-on-Trent has been jailed for 10 years and six months.

Shaun Daniels, 38, of no fixed address, was sentenced on Tuesday after being found guilty of two counts of rape, assault by beating and actual bodily harm during a trial in the city.

He was placed on the sex offenders register and made subject to an indefinite restraining order to protect the victim.

Daniels had previously pleaded guilty to criminal damage to property valued at less than £5,000.

Staffordshire Police said Daniels raped and assaulted the victim at an address in Stoke-on-Trent on 22 January.

Two days later he assaulted her again at Fenton Park. The second attack was witnessed by members of the public, who reported it to police, prompting an investigation.

Det Con Jessica Hill led the investigation. She said Daniels denied the offences when he was arrested but "compelling evidence" was found, which led to a jury finding him guilty.

She praised the victim for her "courage" during the investigation and trial.
