More than 500 people have signed a petition objecting to plans for double yellow lines in a village on the outskirts of York.

City of York Council proposals would see a parking ban on parts of roads in Osbaldwick and a clearway created in Murton Way.

A council report said the plans aimed to tackle obstructive parking and improve visibility at junctions in the village.

However, objectors feared businesses and St Thomas' Church would be negatively affected if parking was restricted.

According to the Local Democracy Reporting Service, the proposals will go before a council transport meeting on Thursday.

The plans were advertised for public consultation in July after the authority agreed to progress with them in October last year.

They would see double yellow lines painted on both sides of the Osbaldwick Link Road, the westbound side of Osbaldwick Lane, Osbaldwick Village and Murton Way.

A clearway on Murton Way would also be introduced, which bans stopping on the roadside at any time, except in an emergency.

The council's report stated plans had come after Osbaldwick Link Road had suffered from verge and footpath parking.

It added vehicles parking close to the junction with Beckett Drive and Murton Way were obstructing pedestrians from using pavements and crossings.

Parking at the junction had also caused bus-blocking issues, resulting in the village playing fields bus stop being missed, it said.

Officers stated residents were given the chance to share their views on the plans but Thursday's decision may not satisfy everyone.

Twenty objections lodged against the proposals included concerns over the effect on local businesses.

Business owner Jordan Lamb said in his online petition the restrictions would take away vital parking needed for residents to go about their daily lives.

He said: "Double yellow lines will restrict parking significantly, creating a ripple effect that could drive away customers who rely on convenient access to our local businesses.

"Adding double yellow lines may seem to be a logical traffic solution, but the implications are far-reaching."

Osbaldwick and Derwent's Restore Britain ward councillor Mark Warters said the measures would move the problem to other parts of the village.

Warters suggested a better solution would be an urban clearway banning parking during peak morning and evening times along Osbaldwick Link Road, Murton Way and Osbaldwick Village.
