More than 1,000 hand-crocheted poppies are on display at a community centre ahead of Remembrance Sunday.

Members of the Hookey Crochet Club at John White Community Centre in Binley, Coventry, spent months making the poppies.

The display, called Poppies for Remembrance, also marks the 20th anniversary of the centre opening its doors.

The centre's chairwoman, 86-year-old Mary Hollins, came up with the idea to celebrate the milestone.

"We were trying to do something special, so I had this idea," she said.

The club, hosted by Natalie Trudgill, meets every Wednesday, and its seven members have been crocheting the red and purple flowers in their own time since January. Trudgill said the process had been "hard going", with Hollins describing it as a "big achievement".

The purple poppies commemorate animals killed or injured during conflict.

Hollins has attended sessions since the club began three years ago and said: "I couldn't crochet when I first started, so it's all down to Natalie showing us what to do."

Each poppy measures about four inches (10cm) across and can take between 10 minutes and half an hour to make, depending on the person's ability, Trudgill said.

The poppies will remain outside the centre until the end of November.

Hollins said the community centre, which hosts a range of activities including a pensioners' group, welcomed anyone who wanted to get involved.
