A 70-year-old man has appeared in court following an incident in which a 100m (328ft) cordon was set up and police found suspected explosive substances and firearms.

Peter Bissell, of Becket Road, Worle, has been charged with possessing explosive substances for unlawful purposes and possessing a firearm without a certificate.

He appeared at Bristol Magistrates' Court on Saturday and was remanded in custody to appear at Bristol Crown Court next week.

Avon and Somerset Police said the incident on 30 September had led to a "complex and significant investigation".

Jen Appleford, neighbourhood policing superintendent, said "multiple agencies" were involved and thanked the Explosive Ordnance Disposal Unit along with officers and staff.

"I appreciate the patience and understanding shown by residents who were affected by the cordon and evacuation measures put in place to keep people safe", she added.

"Court proceedings are now active, and we would ask people not to speculate about the case while it progresses through the criminal justice system."
