A "much-loved landmark" dating back to 1892 in a town park has been refurbished.

Security grilles and prefabricated stairs have been installed on the bandstand in Bedford Park and its perimeter fencing painted.

In July 2024, Bedford Borough Council said there had been an "ongoing issue" with people including rough sleepers gaining unauthorised access to the bandstand.

Conservative councillor Sarah Gallagher, portfolio holder for customer experience, leisure and culture, said: "These recent enhancements reflect our ambition to maintain and enhance this historic park for both residents and visitors."

To celebrate the re-opening of the bandstand, a concert was held led by Ukulele Bedford and Sax's Cool.

Improvements have also been made in other areas of the park.

The council said these included central flower bed maintenance and a footpath upgrade near the Foster Hill Road entrance, aimed at boosting accessibility.

"Bedford Park attracts people from across the borough and beyond," Gallagher added.

"We are proud to ensure it remains a valued and much-loved landmark for years to come, offering a welcoming space for relaxation, recreation and events."

The BBC has asked the council for the cost of the work but has yet to hear back.
