Major road to close for days due to storm damage

A major section of York's inner ring road is to remain closed for several days due to storm damage overnight.

A section of the Fishergate Gyratory was closed on Sunday evening after heavy rain caused the tarmac to lift on the road surface, according to the fire service.

City of York Council said road would remain closed "for a few days" and traffic heading eastbound on Tower Street would be diverted via Piccadilly and Walmgate Bar.

A council statement said: "The road will need to be closed for a few days while we work with Yorkshire Water to understand the cause, then get it fixed."

"For now, all traffic (including busses) remains diverted," the council said.

The damage first appeared on Sunday evening at about 19:47 BST, according to North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service.

"A crew from York attended flooding in a street, crews attempted to clear surface water whilst waiting for the arrival of highways due to pressure of the water causing the tarmac to lift on the road surface," they said.
