Station improvements to 'encourage rural tourism'
Cam Valley Community Rail PartnershipImprovements to railway stations should help to encourage tourists to visit rural Cambridgeshire, a councillor said.
The work is part of a project designed to encourage people to visit villages and attractions in the so-called Cam Valley by train, foot, and bike.
The Cam Valley Community Rail Partnership has received £25,000 of grant funding, some of which has been used to launch a new website, and it hopes to install wayfinding boards at six railway stations.
Lisa Redrup, a Liberal Democrat councillor in South Cambridgeshire, said focusing on railway stations should encourage visitors to travel further along the railway line to discover what the area has to offer.
The project is focusing on Foxton, Meldreth, Shepreth, Whittlesford Parkway, Shelford, and Cambridge South railway stations.
The partnership hopes more than 40 small rural businesses will benefit from increased footfall.
"The project brings together everything people need to plan a day out by rail and enjoy a greener way to travel," said chairwoman Susan Van de Ven.
