Public wake to be held for musician Glen Hansard
PA MediaA public wake will be held for Glen Hansard in Dublin on Monday 3 August followed by his funeral the following day.
The 56-year-old, who shot to prominence when he was cast in 1991 musical comedy film The Commitments, was the long-time frontman of acclaimed rock band The Frames.
The singer-songwriter died in a crash in the early hours of Wednesday, hours after taking part in a tradition music session at The Wren's Nest pub in County Dublin.
A public wake will be held for Hansard in the Baroque Chapel at IMMA, Royal Hospital Kilmainham, between 11:00 and 16:00 local time.
Hansard will lie in repose for those wishing to pay their respects.
His funeral will take place the following day at St Patrick's Cathedral in Dublin city centre at 13:30.
While the funeral will also be open to the public, access inside the cathedral will be limited, given the numbers expected.
Music at the funeral will be provided by Hansard's friends and family.
Tributes had been paid across world of music from the likes of Ed Sheeran and Bruce Springsteen, who said he was "heartbroken".
Former US president Barack Obama, Bruce Springsteen, US actor Rachel Zegler, Hamilton creator Lin-Manuel Miranda, and pop star Billie Eilish were also among the high-profile names who have paid tribute to Hansard.
A memorial busk was held in Dublin on Thursday evening.
Who was Glen Hansard?
Hansard was an Oscar-winning Irish musician who had a storied career in music across more than three decades, including winning the Academy Award for Best Original Song in 2008 with Marketa Irglova, which featured in the low-budget musical romance film Once.
He and Irglova released three albums as The Swell Season, while Hansard also encountered success as a solo artist with 2016 album Didn't He Ramble being nominated for a Grammy in 2016.
Hansard, the father of a three-year-old boy, has also been hailed by charities for his work in raising money for the homeless.
