Police said Vincent Street was closed overnight while officers made inquiries

Seven people have been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after a man was stabbed during a street fight involving a knife and a hammer in Derby.

Derbyshire Police said officers were called to the fight between two groups in Vincent Street, Normanton, at about 20:55 BST on Monday.

The man, 20, was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries but is now in a stable condition, and a 17-year-old boy and a man, 20, sustained head injuries, which are not thought to be serious, police said.

Officers later found the suspects in two vehicles in Sutton-in-Ashfield, Nottinghamshire, where they recovered a knife and arrested four 16-year-old boys, and three men - two aged 20 and one aged 19.

They remain in custody.

Police said it was reported that a group of men and teenage boys arrived in Vincent Street in two cars - a grey VW Polo and white VW Golf - and began fighting with another group.

'Isolated incident'

Temporary Det Insp Alex Hathaway said: "We fully appreciate that incidents of this nature will cause concern in the community.

"But I hope members of the public take some reassurance from the fact that we now have seven suspects in custody thanks to the speedy and co-ordinated response from our officers.

"Residents will see an increased police presence in the area whilst we carry out our inquiries and patrols will be stepped up.

"We believe this was an isolated incident, those involved are known to each other and there is no wider threat to the public."

Officers said they were keen to hear from anyone who witnessed the fight or had CCTV, Ring doorbell or dashcam footage.
