Drone 'followed' Police Scotland helicopter for about a minute

A drone passed within 50ft (15m) of a Police Scotland helicopter and continued to "follow" the aircraft for about a minute.

The incident happened near Strathclyde Loch in Motherwell on 13 May, and meant the safety of the helicopter "had not been assured".

The pilot of the EC135 reported seeing a "bird-winged" shape with red lights which continued to manoeuvre behind them as they changed course.

The UK Airprox Board, which investigates aviation near-misses, heard that despite inquiries the owner of the drone has not yet been traced.

The board was told the incident happened when the police helicopter was undertaking operational duties.

The aircraft climbed to distance itself from the unmanned device, but the drone matched the helicopter for about a minute, before descending rapidly towards Strathclyde Loch.

The board considered that safety had been much reduced below the norm, to the extent that safety had not been assured.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "Around 21:50 on Wednesday, 13 May, a drone was flown near to the police helicopter in the Motherwell area at Strathclyde Loch.

"Inquiries were carried out, but the drone pilot was unable to be traced. The incident has been reported to the relevant agencies"

They added: "It is the personal responsibility of each drone pilot to be aware of the appropriate legislation and the importance of safe and responsible flying, particularly around congested areas, airports and restricted airspace.
