Fresh bid lodged to demolish shopping centre

Fresh plans to demolish part of a shopping centre in the middle of Loughborough have been submitted.

Developer Leicester Commercial Ltd was twice refused permission in May and June to knock down 70% of the Carillon Court Shopping Centre and replace it with student flats.

On both occasions, Charnwood Borough Council said the developer had not provided enough information on how the demolition would affect Tyler's department store and the former Green Man pub.

A fresh application has now been submitted to knock down three retail units and partially demolish a fourth near the Angel Yard entrance to create a link between Market Street and Swan Street.

The latest application, registered on Tuesday, asks for permission to demolish three vacant retail units, units 12, 27, and 28, and the partial demolition of another, unit 26.

The applicant said that the demolition would be "beneficial" while plans to redevelop the centre into a "mixed-use scheme" are drawn up.
