Snake Pass to temporarily close for works
BBCA scenic Peak District route classed as one of England's highest-risk roads is set to temporarily close for ground investigation works.
A notice published by Derbyshire County Council stated Snake Pass will be closed between Derbyshire Level in Glossop and Ladybower Reservoir from 15 June to 3 July.
The road is classed as at risk due to its steep bends and because it is frequently closed by landslips.
Charlotte Hill, cabinet member for highways, said the council appreciated the closure would cause some "inconvenience" to road users but added the work was essential so the authority could "understand the extent of the issues" at the Doctor's Gate site on the road.
'Long-term resilience'
The temporary road closure notice issued by the council confirmed the road would reopen as soon as work was finished, which could be earlier than advertised.
It added access would be maintained whenever "reasonably possible" on the affected length of road.
Hill said: "Snake Pass presents a long-standing and complex engineering challenge due to its underlying geology.
"Addressing this safely requires detailed investigation and significant resources.
"We are working with the East Midlands Combined County Authority to explore opportunities that could help secure the long-term resilience of the A57."
In a statement on social media, Jon Pearce, MP for High Peak, said: "I know this closure will be frustrating for residents, commuters and businesses who rely on this route every day, but the condition of Snake Pass cannot keep being ignored."
Roadworks are often carried out along the road and it is closed regularly due to poor weather and landslips.
The council said the work would enable proposals to be developed and discussed with partners including the government.
