Police have launched an investigation after a 71-year-old woman was knocked over by e-scooter riders in a park in Leicester.

The woman was walking in Humberstone Park on Saturday when she was hit from behind by two boys riding e-scooters.

The woman's son, Michael Riley, said his mother had suffered two broken wrists, a head injury and severe bruising to one of her legs.

Leicestershire Police have appealed for witnesses to come forward.

Riley said his mum had been left "petrified" of returning to the park following the incident.

He said his mum had undergone two rounds of surgery on her leg to relieve pressure and doctors told the family they could not "make any guarantees" on how severely damaged it may be.

She also has a complex fracture on one of her wrists which may require surgery.

"She's stable, but she can't do anything for herself," he said.

"It was very traumatic for her, she's talking about not going to the park again.

"She's blaming herself.

"It's going to be a really long recovery and we're going to have to try and get care for her.

"Don't get me wrong, we'd do it all day. But it's a big adjustment we've got to make."

A spokesperson for Leicestershire Police said the incident took place at about 17:30 BST.

They added: "Police were made aware of the incident around 19:30 and the woman had already been taken to hospital, where she currently remains receiving treatment.

"It is reported the e-scooters were being ridden by two teenage boys. They left the scene – travelling in the direction of Ambassador Road.

"Police are continuing to investigate the incident and are asking anyone who may have witnessed the incident or have any information to call 101."
