Work to build the next phase of a long-awaited bypass which will connect Scunthorpe's southern motorway junction to the rest of the town is due to begin "in the coming days", North Lincolnshire Council has said.

Contractor Applebridge has been appointed to work on the Burringham Bypass, which is expected to be completed early next summer.

The move follows planning approval for the scheme being granted in July and the funding being agreed through the council.

Council leader Rob Waltham said: "The pace is really beginning to quicken and it's fantastic to see another major piece of infrastructure moving towards construction."

North Lincolnshire Council believes the bypass will help drivers commuting to Scunthorpe from southern suburbs and villages

Burringham Bypass will connect the M181 directly to Burringham Road.

North Lincolnshire Council said it would provide the infrastructure needed for six new villages to the west of Scunthorpe, and give people a more direct route to the motorway from Ashby, Bottesford, Burringham, Yaddlethorpe and Messingham.

The road currently contains a roundabout with four junctions but two lead to abrupt dead ends.

According to the Local Democracy Reporting Service, the council is providing £6.8m in funding for the development.

Waltham said: "We've secured the funding, planning permission and now have a contractor set to build the road.

"This is about making everyday journeys easier for existing residents while putting the right infrastructure in place before new communities are built."
