Fifty-nine nitrous oxide canisters, six boxes of suspected steroids, illegal cigarettes and vapes have been seized by police during a shop raid in West Yorkshire.

Officers had a warrant to search a shop on Huddersfield Road in Ravensthorpe, Dewsbury, as part of an investigation into the supply of illegal drugs in the area.

Police said the recovered items had an estimated street value of £2,000, with the nitrous oxide accounting for more than £1,000.

Insp Amanda Holroyd, of Kirklees Police, said: "The illegal supply of drugs and the associated violent crime it so often brings is a blight on communities and tackling this kind of offending is a real priority for us in Ravensthorpe."

West Yorkshire Police said abuse of nitrous oxide had been linked to suffocation through lack of oxygen, nerve and heart damage and mental health abuse as well as contributing to road deaths.

Most of the black-and-yellow cylinders appear identical, with warning labels and nozzles attached, while one purple canister stands out among them. "Today's warrant has seen us seize significant amounts of nitrous oxide as well as suspected steroids," Holroyd said.

"As with all drugs, we know the abuse of nitrous oxide can carry serious and potentially fatal health risks, and it is important we continue to work to stop it's illegal use in our communities."

Anyone with information about drug crime in the area is asked to report it to West Yorkshire Police.
