Man in hospital and road closed after attack

Shields Road in Byker has been cordoned off following an assault

A man is in hospital and a busy high street has been closed after a man was seriously injured in an assault.

Northumbria Police said it was called to Shields Road, in Byker, Newcastle, at 19:25 BST on Tuesday after reports of an attack.

The Great North Air Ambulance Service said it sent a critical care team to the scene and it assisted the North East Ambulance Service in transporting a man to hospital.

Police said the road was closed to traffic but there was "no wider risk to the public".

A man was taken to hospital following the assault

An ambulance service spokesperson said: "We sent two emergency ambulance crews to the scene along with a clinical team leader, our Hazardous Area Response Team and the Great North Air Ambulance, who treated and transported the patient to the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle."
