Woman dies in car crash on busy road

A woman in her 70s has died in a car crash on a busy stretch of road, police have said.

Northumbria Police said it happened at about 13:30 BST on Saturday on the A69 between Haydon Bridge and Hexham.

The force said the woman had been a passenger in a Volkswagen Tiguan travelling eastbound when it was in collision with a black Honda coming from the opposite direction.

The driver of the Honda, a man in his 30s, suffered serious but not life-threatening injuries and was taken to hospital.

Part of the road was closed for several hours but has since reopened.

Officers have appealed for any witnesses or anyone with dashcam footage to come forward.

"This is an incredibly tragic incident where a woman has lost her life," Sgt Greg Huntley said.

He added: "We know this is a very busy stretch of road in Northumberland – and there will have likely been many motorists passing in both directions.

"If you were in the area or have any information that might help with our investigation, please don't hesitate to get in touch."
