Purchases are part of Leale's Yard transport plan

The States of Guernsey has purchased property in the north of Guernsey as part of a plan for transport links for the Leale's Yard development.

The sites, next to the site in St Sampson, were bought for a combined value of £2.12m on Tuesday and comprise of a plot of land, part of a garden, two houses and a workshop.

The Policy & Resources Committee said previous outline plans for transport and utilities infrastructure connecting Route Militaire through the Saltpans site would be withdrawn and replaced by "new more comprehensive plans".

Deputy Yvonne Burford, vice-president, said improving the transport network was "crucial" in addressing the impact of the "much-needed" development.

Burford thanked landowners who had engaged with the process and added: "Leale's Yard has long been recognised as a strategically important site for the regeneration of the Bridge, the delivery of critical infrastructure and essential housing.

"Progressing this work is a super priority for the States this political term and we're pressing on with it."

The States said the new infrastructure would support building homes as well as the broader economic regeneration across the Braye du Valle area.

Among sites purchased was Atec Engineering's workshop. The States said it was working with the firm as it sought suitable alternative premises and it would continue to operate from its current premises while its relocation was being arranged.

Adrian Marsh, of Atec Engineering, said the Leale's Yard regeneration had been "decades in the making" and he hoped it would bring "tangible and lasting" benefit to the area.

More broadly, demolition was now under way, the States said.
