A city centre library has partially closed after a large glass door shattered and injured a baby and staff member.

The main entrance to the ground floor of the Norfolk and Norwich Millennium Library at the Forum in Norwich has been cordoned off following the incident.

In July the 25-year-old library reopened following a £1.3m revamp, but Norfolk County Council said the glass doors were installed in 2001 when the site was originally built.

"The ground floor of the Millennium Library will remain closed until further notice and all events scheduled for the ground floor today are postponed," the authority said.

A staff member has suffered minor cuts from the glass door shattering on top of them, the library's manager said.

Olivia Taylor, 34, said she was waiting at the library's door when shattered glass fell on top of her 16-month-old daughter while she was in her pram and cut her stomach.

"It was a big shock and could have been a lot worse," she said, adding her daughter was fine after being looked over by a doctor.

The first and second floor of the library remained open, the county council said.

Tatiane Wittred, 41, said she was waiting to enter the library with her child when the incident took place, adding: "The poor guy was opening the door to start the day when it cracked into pieces. It was a bit of a shock and you worry about the standard of things."

Anne Tidd, the library's manager, warned parts of the library could be closed for some time as work continued to clean up the glass and repair the doors.

Currently, the first and second floors were still open and people can still access the early years area and the American library sections.

A spokesperson for the Forum said: "The ground floor of the Norfolk and Norwich Millennium Library is closed until further notice."

A Norfolk County Council spokesperson apologised for any inconvenience caused and thanked visitors for their patience.
