States schools to close due to Storm Austen
BBCStates of Guernsey schools will be closed on Friday due to predicted high winds caused by Storm Austen, officials have said.
Jersey Met has issued a red wind warning for Friday morning with force nine gusts of 75mph (120km/h) and potentially force 10 up to 85mph.
The States said there was a risk of flying debris and falling trees especially during the peak of the storm when people would usually be commuting.
Emergency services advised roads should be kept as clear as possible in case they need to respond to an incident, which officials said led to the decision to close schools.
'Protect your property'
The States said medical appointments would be going ahead but patients would be contacted directly if cancellations occured.
Islanders were advised to avoid unnecessary outdoor activity overnight into Friday morning.
"Ensure you have taken measures to protect your property, securing things like outdoor furniture at your house and closing windows, and if you have a boat, checking its moorings before the storm arrives," the States said.
"If you are on the roads, please drive cautiously and be considerate of others and the conditions around you.
"There will be travel disruption both at the harbour and airport, and we would advise islanders to check in with their travel providers for more information."
The States said the worst of the storm should have passed by about 12:00 but winds would remain high into the weekend.
It said it would continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as the situation progresses.
