Dog walker injured after being hit by car

An elderly woman has been taken to hospital with serious injuries after being struck by a car while she was walking her dog, police say.

Sussex Police said the woman was struck by a white Volvo XC40 at about 07:30 BST on Wednesday, prompting the closure of the road in both directions between the Eagles roundabout and Diplocks Way.

The woman's dog was also injured and taken to a vet, while the driver of the Volvo was unhurt, the force said.

The collision led to significant disruption because it coincided with the closure of South Road for planned gas works in Hailsham.

Sussex Police said it was appealing for witnesses and urged motorists to avoid the area and use alternative routes.

Restrictions linked to the works began on Monday and are expected to remain in place for about eight weeks.

An SGN spokesperson said the work was part of a programme to replace mains pipes, which will carry on in the area until the end of October.
