Portsmouth's Sails of the South landmark has been restored

A sail sculpture damaged by storms in 2024 has been restored to its full glory following extensive refurbishment.

The 43m (141ft) Tri-Sail or Sails of the South sculpture, which stands between the M275 carriageways in Portsmouth, was originally installed to provide a welcoming landmark to people entering the city.

The project to replace all of its sail panels after recent storms also included structural checks and lighting upgrades.

Sections of the motorway were temporarily closed during the maintenance work.

Leader of Portsmouth City Council Steve Pitt said: "The Sails of the South are an iconic symbol of Portsmouth, welcoming people into our city.

"I'm delighted that this refurbishment is now complete, restoring the structure so it looks its best for the city's Portsmouth100 celebrations, and remains safe and resilient for many years to come."
