Homes and golf club without power after workshop fire

Hundreds of residents woke up to a power cut after fire damaged overhead power cables.

Fire crews were called to Burton Road, near Bridport, Dorset, shortly after 05:00 BST, where a private workshop was alight.

National Grid said power had been restored to 401 properties but 20 remained without electricity.

Among them is Bridport and West Dorset Golf Club, which said it would remain closed for the rest of the day.

National Grid apologised for the disruption and said it hoped to reconnect the remaining customers by 13:00.

In a social media post, the golf club said: "Due to the localised power cut, the clubhouse and driving range will remain closed for the rest of today.

"Unfortunately, the midweek carvery has had to be cancelled.

"We apologise for the inconvenience and thank you for your understanding."

Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service said the road was closed at the junction to Marsh Barn and the water treatment plant while crews from two stations tackled the blaze, which was out by 07:40.

"The electricity board was requested due to the fire affecting a main power line," it added.
