A new padel club in York has applied for a licence to sell alcohol.

Pure Padel Clubs wants to be able to serve alcohol at its new Clifton Moor site from 11:00 to 22:00 daily.

The facility at Clifton Moor Retail Park is set to open in July, according to the operator's website, two years after planning permission was initially approved.

It will feature four covered courts and one uncovered court, a clubhouse with social spaces and a pro-shop, along with parking.

The padel club, located in what was formerly a section of the Vue Cinema car park, will be open from 06:00 to 22:00 daily, according to the Local Democracy Reporting service.

Pure Padel said the facility would be "state-of-the-art", with players able to make use of it on a pay-to-play basis.

Padel is played on an enclosed court about a third of the size those used for tennis with balls played off glass walls similar to squash.

The Lawn Tennis Association (LTA), the sports governing body, stated it is easy to learn and sociable, contributing to its growing popularity.

A hotel in York has lodged plans to replace its existing tennis courts with padel facilities amid the sport's growing popularity, with millions of players worldwide.
