Ex-Bake Off semi-finalist reveals show's secrets

As The Great British Bake Off returns to television screens tonight, a former semi-finalist has lifted the lid on the realities of life inside the famous tent, revealing that one of the toughest challenges was not the baking itself but keeping his appearance on the show a secret for months.

Toby Littlewood, who reached the semi-final of the Channel 4 programme in 2025, said contestants often completed filming long before the series aired, leaving them unable to tell friends and family about their experience.

"You'll have done all of the filming and then you have that period where you have to keep a secret," he said.

"Now it's a huge sense of relief because everyone knows you've been on and the secrets that you have to keep become less and less every week."

Littlewood also described the demanding filming schedule behind the shows, with contestans balancing their time in the tent alongside full-time jobs.

"You're working Monday to Friday, then you go to the hotel on Friday night and you're filming all day Saturday," he said.

Despite the pressure, he said there were plenty of memorable moments, including receiving one of Paul Hollywood's coveted Hollywood Handshakes for his mini apple meringue pies.

"I can't lie, it's great," he laughed.

While viewers focus on the baking, Littlewood, from Warwick, said contestants have a helping hand when it comes to tidying up afterwards.

"I was like, 'I have reached the pinnacle of celebrity status. Someone's doing my washing up for me'."

This year's series also sees Nigella Lawson join the judging panel, a move Littlewood believes will be a success.

"I think she's going to be great," he said. "She's a big personality, she has so much experience and she's incredibly knowledgeable.

"I feel like she's perhaps slightly more outspoken, which is going to be great and bring a little bit of balance into the judging."

He added that Lawson remained relatable to home bakers because of her hands-on approach to recipe development.

Since appearing on the programme, Littlewood said guests visiting his home have come to expect baked treats.

"People expect cake, yes," he laughed.

"I love hosting people. If I know someone's coming round at the weekend, I spend my whole week planning the food. I want them to go away talking about how amazing the food was."

The new series of The Great British Bake Off begins tonight.
