Watch: Water erupts from road near landmark

The burst was first reported at 21:00 BST on Tuesday

A jet of water has erupted from a road near an Oxfordshire landmark, showering passing cars and scattering debris.

The leak was first reported near the Fine Lady on a White Horse statue in West Bar Street, Banbury Cross, at about 21:00 BST on Tuesday.

The landmark commemorates the nursery rhyme which has made the town famous throughout the world.

Thames Water said the flow from the burst water main was stopped at 22:00 and the road had been closed for repairs.

In a statement, the firm said: "We apologise for the disruption caused by a burst water main in Banbury last night.

"Six customers are temporarily without water while we continue to carry out our repair work and a customer representative is in the area today to speak to anyone who has been affected.

"West Bar Street at the junction with the Banbury Cross roundabout will remain closed while our engineers work to repair the pipe as quickly as possible."

On Tuesday evening, Oxfordshire county councillor Paul-Austin Sargent, who filmed the burst, said the gushing water was breaking up the road surface and there was a danger that onlookers would be hurt.
