What's for dinner makes couple social media stars

A couple in their fifties have attracted millions of views on social media with videos built around a simple daily question: "What's for dinner?"

For the past seven months, Dawn Emmett has been filming her partner Neil Haycock as he serves up their evening meals at their home in Great Barr, Birmingham.

What started as a bit of fun has begun to appeal to TikTok, Instagram and Facebook users of all ages from around the world.

"We are so thankful for everyone being so kind, because we are older you don't know how it is going to go," Emmett said.

It started one night when the 58-year-old was scrolling through TikTok and started filming her partner cooking mussels and chips.

She posted it online, and a few days later thousands of people had viewed it, prompting her to continue uploading videos of her asking: "What's for dinner, Neil?".

"It just snowballed and snowballed," she said. "It was 2,000 people, 10,000 people and then it was, 'oh my God we have got to a million views'."

For 53-year-old Haycock, cooking is something he has loved doing since he was a teenager.

"Mum brought me a Ken Hom cookbook and I got a passion for it," he said.

"I have always cooked, always cooked Sunday dinners. I find it really therapeutic and enjoyable."

One of his tasty-looking dishes has done particularly well online.

"I think the best one was when I did roast seabass on the barbecue and it came out with the whole fish with the head on, that was on about three-and-a-half million," Haycock said.

Millions have also watched him presenting his partner with a plate of peri-peri chicken with spicy rice, and another of pork belly with spiced red cabbage and fondant potatoes.

The videos have led to the couple gaining thousands of followers and even getting recognised locally.

Emmett says she was out recently and a young girl asked her if she was on TikTok.

She replied: "What's for dinner, Neil?".
