'Important' advice issued for dog walkers on coast

A charity has warned there are "important things" for people to consider when taking their dogs to the coast.

Dogs Trust Canterbury urged dog owners to check tide times and the weather before "any paws even touch sand".

"A trip to the beach can be a fantastic day out for both dogs and their owners," said the branch's manager Jo Stuckey.

"But a little planning can make all the difference.

"Making sure your dog has plenty of fresh water and shade... and keeping them on a lead where needed are all simple steps that help keep them safe while protecting wildlife and ensuring everyone can enjoy Kent's beautiful coastline."

The Dogs Trust said being responsible was one of the "greatest acts of love" someone can do for their pet.

"Always check sea conditions... before letting your dog swim or paddle in the sea, as even the best swimmers can be quickly swept out to sea by strong rip currents," it added.

The charity warned dogs should not drink seawater - "no matter how tasty it may seem" - as it can cause sickness and poisoning.

Meanwhile, owners should ensure their pooches do not eat anything they should not and bring a "safe snack", it said.

People should check if the beach they are visiting allows dogs as some ban them at certain times of the year, the trust continued.

"Dispose of dog waste responsibly and help keep beaches clean for everyone," it added.
