Work to reduce the flood risk on a road in Wiltshire is set to begin later this month.

A stretch of the A342 at St Ediths Marsh in Bromham, near Devizes, will be closed or partially closed in phases between 18 May and 5 June for highway and drainage improvements.

The work being carried out by Wiltshire Council will include installing a new drainage system to reduce surface water on the road during heavy rain.

Councillor Martin Smith, cabinet member for highways, said he recognised the closure will cause some disruption but added the work will "help to resolve along-standing issue".

Traffic lights will be installed for the first phase of the scheme, followed by a four-day full closure between 26 and 29 May.

Smith said the work will improve drainage and "significantly reduce the risk of flooding, helping to manage flood impacts and keep the route usable in wet conditions".

He added: "While we recognise that the road closure will cause some short‑term disruption, it is essential to ensure the new crossing is installed safely and properly.

"We thank residents and road users for their patience while we carry out work that will bring long‑term benefits."
