Water returning for some homes after supply issues

Water supplies have been restored to some homes in Kent, while others are still coping with outages.

Bredgar, Borden and Doddington, near Sittingbourne, had supplies restored overnight, South East Water said.

But drinking water remains cut off in Teynham owing to "urgent essential maintenance to electrical equipment" at a water treatment plant.

Further losses of supply have also been reported in Chestfield, near Whitstable, due to a burst main, which the water company said it had fixed.

Bottled water stations are open in Asda and Morrisons in Mill Way, Sittingbourne, as well as in Teynham Village Hall.

At its height, issues in the area had affected about 4,600 homes, according to the water company.

Other supply losses this weekend in Lenham, Otterden, Pluckley and Egerton, which also had been caused by the urgent maintenance, were "gradually being restored" throughout the day, South East Water said.

The work on the water treatment plant had been brought forward owing to wider power issues in the Sittingbourne area, it said.

Thousands of homes in Tonbridge went without water for much of Saturday in the second outage in as many weekends. Supply has since been restored.

South East Water said a different pipe had burst to the one that had caused the previous supply failure.

In other parts of Kent, more than 3,000 properties in Sutton Valence, Headcorn, Ulcombe and Kingswood were also left without water earlier this week, but supplies are now beginning to return.
