The Changing Places toilet in Lower Gardens was closed due to vandalism

A specialist changing toilet that was closed for months as a result of vandalism has reopened with added security measures.

The Changing Places facility in Bournemouth's Lower Gardens, designed for people with severe disabilities and their carers, had been continuously shut since August 2025.

Patricia Risbridger, whose granddaughter has cerebral palsy, previously described the lengthy closure as "outrageous".

Bournemouth Christchurch and Poole Council (BCP) apologised and said the toilet was now equipped with a video-enabled intercom system to prevent antisocial behaviour and vandalism.

Changing Places are specialist toilets with a changing bed and hoist, allowing carers to lift older children or adults who have severe disabilities.

BCP said the toilet had been closed for a year due to vandalism

Risbridger, from Poole, who cares for eight-year-old Esmai, said the toilet at Lower Gardens had been closed for about two years.

"We are lucky, we can still lift her, just about, but there are many people who don't have that option so they either have to not go out or cut their visit short which, in 2026, is just outrageous."

BCP said vandals had caused "thousands of pounds worth of damage" but the upgraded facility reopened on Thursday.

Environment councillor Andy Hadley said: "We want to provide clean, accessible toilet facilities, including Changing Places toilets, for all residents and visitors.

"Our antisocial behaviour team and Community Safety Accreditation Scheme officers will work closely with our facilities team to monitor the toilet.

"We are sorry for the amount of time the toilet was closed due to vandalism and while we thoroughly tested the new system, and we understand the impact this had."
