Murder arrest after woman fatally stabbed

A man has been arrested on suspicion of murder after a 72-year-old woman was found with stab wounds at a property in Swadlincote.

Derbyshire Police said officers were called to an address on The Crest in Linton just after 14:30 BST on Sunday.

The womanwas pronounced dead at the scene, the force added.

A 52-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder and remains in police custody.

A police spokesperson said the woman's family were being supported by specialist officers.

The force said road closures around the property had now been lifted "but a scene remains at the house and is expected to be in place for a number of days".

Police are appealing for information and have urged anyone who has CCTV, doorbell or dashcam footage that covers The Crest between 00:01 on Saturday and 15:00 on Sunday to get in touch.

Det Insp Tony Owen, from the East Midlands Special Operations Unit, who is leading the investigation, added: "Members of the public can expect to see an increased police presence in the area whilst we carry out our inquiries.

"We are aware that this may cause some concern in the community but I would like to reassure residents that this is believed to be an isolated incident.

"If you have any concerns or would like to pass on any information, please feel free to approach officers."
