A man has been charged after a crash on the A46 near Leicester following a police pursuit.

Leicestershire Police said the pursuit was authorised after a van - reported to have been stolen - was spotted in the early hours of Monday.

The crash then occurred on the southbound carriageway of the A46 at about 04:10 BST, and involved a white Mercedes van and blue BMW 1 series, police added.

The BMW driver, a man in his 20s, sustained serious injuries and remains in hospital in a stable condition. Niks Rogacs, of Acacia Close, Leicester, has been charged with causing serious injury by dangerous driving, theft of a vehicle and driving without insurance.

Rogacs, 26, is due to appear at Leicester Magistrates' Court later.

After the crash, the force's professional standards department was informed, and the incident has been referred to the Independent Office for Police Conduct watchdog.
