'Doughnut' crackdown extended in town's car parks

A public space protection order (PSPO) has been extended in a Lincolnshire town following reports of drivers doing "doughnuts" around car parks.

South Kesteven District Council implemented a three-year extension to three car parks in Stamford at a council meeting on Tuesday.

PSPOs give councils and the police additional powers to deal with a particular problem in a certain area.

The council said the PSPO would help tackle persistent anti-social behaviour by issuing fines to offenders of up to £10 or up to £1,000 if it goes to court.

The PSPO in the Cattle Market, Meadows and Bath Row car parks was due to run out in October.

The decision to extend the order comes after reports of "nuisance drivers" doing "doughnuts" in town centre car parks.

Councillor Virginia Moran said the council and Lincolnshire Police would have had a "limited ability" to tackle the anti-social behaviour if the PSPO had not been renewed.

According to the Local Democracy Reporting Service, Moran said the PSPO was varied to include new areas within the car park.

"This will allow the PSPO to act as a deterrent and prohibit vehicle related nuisance and anti-social behaviour," she added.
