Woman dies in crash involving street cleaning vehicle

A man has been arrested after a woman died in a crash involving a car and a street cleaning vehicle.

Emergency services were called to Christ Church Road, Epsom, shortly before 23:40 BST on Wednesday following a report of a crash involving a black Smart car and a stationary street cleaning vehicle.

The passenger of the Smart car, a woman in her 20s, died at the scene. Her next of kin have been informed, Surrey Police said.

A man in his 20s, who was driving the car, has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving, driving whilst over the prescribed limit, failing to provide a specimen and causing death by driving whilst uninsured.

He was taken to hospital for medical treatment, police said.

Anyone who was in the area between 23:35 and 23:40 or who witnessed the crash is urged to contact the force.

"We are particularly interested in the manner of driving of the black Smart car in the moments leading up to the collision," a spokesperson said.

Christ Church Road was closed for several hours to allow officers to carry out their initial inquiries. It has since reopened.
