The Channel Islands have recorded their hottest day on record for May, topping the previous record for temperatures set the day before.

Temperatures in Jersey hit 31.9C (89.4F) on Monday, beating the 30.1C (86.1F) on Sunday; while a new record was also recorded in Guernsey, with temperatures climbing to 30.7C (87.2F) up from 26.8C (80.2F).

The Met Office is forecasting temperatures to continue to rise, with the potential of hitting 34C (93.2F) in Jersey and 33C (91.4F) in Guernsey.

The record for the UK's hottest day in May has also been broken, with temperatures reaching 34.8C in Kew Gardens in London, while in south-west England a yellow heat health alert remains in place until Wednesday.

'Remarkable for May'

Enzo Davy, weather forecaster at Jersey Met, said the May record was "likely to be broken" again on Tuesday for the "third day running".

He said "an exceptionally warm night" is to be expected on Monday, with Jersey expecting to have a "tropical night with "temperatures unlikely to fall below 20C [68F]."

"That is remarkable for May," he said.

He added that Guernsey would not meet the tropical night threshold but would still be notably warm, and Wednesday was set to be the last day of the "extreme heat".
