Teenager clocked driving at 98mph near school

A teenager has been banned from driving after he was clocked at a speed of 98mph near a primary school - almost 70mph above the limit for the area.

Musa Rafiq, 19, of Canterbury Road, Worcester, was convicted at Worcester Magistrates Court of dangerous driving.

He sped along the A4103 in Leigh Sinton, Worcestershire, on 20 February, "just metres away", police said, from Leigh & Bransford Primary School.

Rafiq was disqualified from driving for 18 months and ordered to undertake 200 hours of unpaid work. He was also ordered to pay £85 in costs and a £114 victim surcharge.

A spokesperson for West Mercia Police said: "West Mercia Police are committed to bringing those road users who think they are above the law to justice and we hope this serves as a warning to others of the consequences of their actions if they chose to act so recklessly."

Councillor Chris McSweeney, who represents the Leigh Sinton area for Worcestershire County Council, said he would have "personally liked a longer driving ban" for the offender.

He added: "This is extremely excessive speed in a 30mph limit, which is near a school where people are walking their children to school.

"This is an issue in Leigh Sinton with general road safety, but to have something of this level of danger... clearly, this is an extreme incident.

"This sort of thing is completely unacceptable and we need the police and the courts to make a point of that."
