Police powers further extended after disorder

Police have been granted further powers in a Sheffield suburb after two disorder incidents left three people injured.

Officers can stop and search people in and around Page Hall until 19:40 BST after an incident involving a crowd carrying wooden bats and an assault involving metal bars were reported on Monday and Tuesday.

A woman needed hospital treatment after Monday's disorder on Willoughby Street and two men were seriously injured during Tuesday's violence.

The two incidents are thought to be connected, according to South Yorkshire Police, with two men aged 21 and 38 arrested on suspicion of attempted murder.

Another man, 30, was arrested on suspicion of assault, with a 28-year-old held on suspicion of possession of an offensive weapon following a vehicle search.

Section 60 of the Criminal Justice and Public Order Act 1994, which was put in place on Tuesday and later extended, gives officers temporary authority to stop and search "any person or vehicle" within a specific geographic area "without needing standard reasonable suspicion".

Acting Insp James Lawson, from the force, said: "We do not use Section 60 notices lightly.

"We have extended the order because we take the threat of disorder very seriously and our priority will always be to protect residents."

On Monday night, officers were called to a disturbance involving a large group of people on Willoughby Street armed with bats.

Police were then called on Tuesday afternoon to reports of a collision involving a silver Volkswagen Passat and a pedestrian on Owler Lane.

Occupants of the vehicle are believed to have subsequently assaulted a man with metal bars.

Lawson added: "Officers will continue to carry out patrols in Page Hall in the coming days to provide a direct point of contact for anyone with concerns and to deter further offending."
