Prison service apologises after pictures of murderer in Magilligan appear on social media

The Prison Service has apologised to the family of a man who was murdered in 2018 after a social media video of photographs taken inside Magilligan Prison appeared to show one of his killers posing for pictures.

Sean Anderson was one of two men who were jailed for life in 2023 for the murder of Karol Kelly in Londonderry in 2018.

A mobile phone was recovered from the prison on Tuesday after an intelligence-led operation and search. It has been passed to the PSNI.

The Director General of Prisons met Karol Kelly's family to offer a "sincere apology" for the additional pain and upset the post has caused.

The pictures also show derogatory statements about Justice Minister Naomi Long.

"The introduction of contraband into prison is a criminal offence and the possession of unauthorised mobile phones is a serious breach of prison rules," the NI Prison Service said.

"The Prison Service remains committed to preventing illicit items from entering prisons and to supporting all efforts to investigate such activity.

"As this is the subject of an ongoing criminal investigation, it would be inappropriate to comment further at this time."
