Footballers injured in hit-and-run, club says

A non-league football club has said four of its players were injured by a hit-and-run driver in Leicester city centre at the weekend.

Leicestershire Police said four pedestrians were struck by a vehicle in Vaughan Way shortly after 22:00 BST on Saturday, with two suffering serious injuries.

A 38-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving, driving while over the prescribed limit for alcohol and causing grievous bodily harm. He has been released on bail "pending further inquiries",

Posting on X, Lutterworth Town FC said its players had been hurt in the incident.

The club, which plays in the United Counties League Premier Division South, said in a statement its "thoughts and heartfelt love" were with the four men.

"Everyone connected with the club - players, management, committee members and supporters - sends their love and best wishes to all four players, as well as their families and friends during what will undoubtedly be a difficult and worrying time," it said.

"We wish each of you a speedy and full recovery and look forward to seeing you all back with the Lutterworth Town family when the time is right."

Leicestershire Police has appealed for witnesses to the "isolated incident" and said a vehicle believed to be involved had been identified.
