Passer-by rescues driver from submerged vehicle

Emergency crews were called to the scene in Whitby just before midday on Friday

A driver whose vehicle became submerged after it entered Whitby Harbour has been rescued by a passer-by.

The incident happened at about 11:50 BST on Friday, with emergency services arriving shortly after and the RNLI retrieving the driver by lifeboat.

Fire crews from Whitby and Lythe, as well as the coastguard rescue teams and police, attended the scene.

Immediate emergency care was administered before the arrival of ambulance crews and the driver was then taken to hospital for treatment, according to North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service.
