Two arson arrests over garage and warehouse fire

Two men have been arrested on suspicion of arson after a large fire at a Merseyside garage and furniture warehouse.

The blaze broke out at the site in Fernhill Road, Bootle, shortly after 20:00 BST on Tuesday.

There were no injuries but nearby homes were evacuated as a precaution and road closures were put in place.

A 37-year-old man from Belle Vale in south Liverpool and a 28-year-old man from Kirkby was being held on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life.

Merseyside Police is conducting a joint investigation with the fire service.

Det Ch Insp Louise Hooley appealed for anyone with information to come forward.

"Thankfully the fire was quickly contained to prevent it from spreading to nearby homes," she said.

"However, it has greatly impacted those living close by with homes evacuated and residents in the wider community advised to keep their windows and doors closed so as not to inhale any fumes.

"We all know too well the devastation and fatal consequences such an incredibly dangerous act can cause."
