A 19-year-old student who was taken to hospital after getting into difficulties in a lake in Nottinghamshire died from drowning, an inquest opening has heard.

Panashe Muchenje, who lived in Hucknall, was taken to the Queen's Medical Centre in Nottingham after he had gone swimming with friends at Balderton Lake, off Heron Way in New Balderton, on 28 May.

He died two days later after his life support was switched off.

An inquest was opened at Nottingham Coroner's Court on Wednesday, and was adjourned until 26 November.

Mairin Casey, senior coroner, said the deceased - whose funeral was held in June - had gone to Balderton Lake at about 13:30 BST.

"The initial information appears to be that he was with a group of friends when he entered the lake," she said.

"Tragically, they observed him getting into difficulty."

Emergency services were called to the scene, and Panashe was taken to hospital, where he died on 30 May.

A provisional cause of death has been listed as drowning, the inquest opening heard.
