Appeal to trace men who helped officer after assault
GoogleAn appeal has been launched to trace members of the public that came to the aid of an officer who was assaulted in a street in Derby.
Police said a female officer tried to help a man who appeared to be lying unconscious in Arbor Close, off Abbey Street. As she tried to help the man, the force said he became violent and assaulted her at 14:45 BST on Thursday.
The man was arrested and remains in police custody, while the officer was taken to hospital and has since been discharged.
Derbyshire Police said it wanted to speak to a "number of men" who helped detain the suspect until other officers arrived.
Chief Constable Simon Blatchly said: "I first want to thank the members of the public who helped this officer, they did not hesitate and their assistance really is appreciated.
"While officers understand that they may have to put themselves in harm's way - all this officer was trying to do was help this man, and instead she was seriously assaulted."
Blatchly has said this comes days after an officer was taken to hospital with a broken arm following a police chase in Derby.
