A former abattoir worker has admitted animal cruelty by forcing a sheep against a door and walking on its back.

Khawaja Hussain, 26, worked at T&S Abattoir in Arley, Warwickshire, which closed last year following a probe into animal welfare by the Food Standards Agency (FSA).

He appeared at Warwickshire Justice Centre earlier where he pleaded guilty to causing unnecessary suffering to a protected animal on 2 August 2024.

He will be sentenced on 13 November.

The abattoir closed after activists made a covert film showing treatment of sheep at the halal meat supplier, which came to light in February last year.

The FSA carried out an investigation and said it lacked confidence in the ability of the abattoir to deliver "consistent compliance" in regards to animal welfare.

Another worker, Hasan Sharif, 26, from Avondale Road in Birmingham, is due to appear at Coventry Magistrates Court next April.

He has denied causing unnecessary suffering to a sheep.
