Lifeguards to remain at 15 beaches over half-term
BBCLifeguards are to work an extra week across 15 beaches to cover the school half-term holiday.
The RNLI said the extra patrols would run daily from 17 October to 1 November at some Cornwall beaches to make sure families, visitors and local residents could enjoy "safer visits" to the coast during the holiday period.
Guy Botterill, RNLI regional lifeguard lead for the South West, said risks at the coast remained although the summer was over.
He said: "Autumn can bring powerful waves, strong rip currents and rapidly changing weather conditions, so we'd encourage anyone planning a trip to the beach to choose a lifeguarded beach whenever possible and speak to our lifeguards for local safety advice."
He added beachgoers were reminded that RNLI lifeguards would be on duty between 10:00 BST and 18:00 until 25 October.
The beaches with extra patrols include:
- Widemouth
- Summerleaze
- Polzeath
- Harlyn
- Constantine
- Hayle Towans
- Gwithian North
- Chapel Porth
- Porthtowan
- Mawgan Porth
- Towan
- Crantock
- Praa Sands
- Tregonhawke
- Watergate Bay
They would be joining Fistral, Perranporth, Porthmeor and Sennen, which were already set to continue to be patrolled until 1 November, managers said.
'Keep people safe'
Thalia Marrington, Cornwall Council's cabinet member for community safety, said: "We know how much people enjoy Cornwall's beaches, and it's brilliant that RNLI lifeguards will be on patrol at some of our beaches for an extra week during half term.
"Thank you to the RNLI teams who work so hard to keep people safe and who are there to help when people need them."
The RNLI added it wanted to remind people to visit a lifeguarded beach, check tide times and weather forecasts before heading out, and always swim and bodyboard between the red and yellow flags.
