School extensions set to create extra places

Two Wolverhampton schools have been granted permission to extend their buildings to cope with rising demand.

A £1.725m plan to create 160 new places at Moreton School and Aldersley High School has been approved by planners at the City of Wolverhampton Council.

The Amethyst Academies Trust, which runs Moreton School on Old Fallings Lane, Bushbury, submitted proposals for a single-storey extension to allow three new classrooms, an IT room and a gym.

The project would make room for an extra 150 pupils, needed following an increase in admission numbers, the trust said.

Within the 150 would be an additional Year Seven "bulge class" of 30 places, and 30 more places created across Years Eight and Nine.

The council approved funding agreements with the trust, which runs both schools, earlier this year.

Permission was also sought to extend the sports hall of Aldersley High School, on Barnhurst Lane, to create a smaller hall, classroom and office.

Under the scheme, a further 70 places would be created, along with an additional Year Seven "bulge class" of 30 places, and 20 further places across Years Eight and Nine.

As part of the decision, the council said it would also be creating an extra 45 school places in the city – 30 places at Bilston CE Primary School and 15 places at St Matthias School.
