Police have seized a bike in Leicester from a young person which they said raised "serious safety concerns".

South Leicester policing team said it seized the bike on Wednesday evening after officers on patrol deemed it posed a "danger to the rider and other road users".

The policing team added the condition of the bike "particularly the wiring and electrical setup, raises significant concerns about the risk of an electrical fault and a potentially devastating fire".

A spokesperson urged parents and guardians to check the bikes their children were riding and bringing into their homes.

"This is not about being awkward or stopping young people from enjoying themselves," the spokesperson added. "It is about safety, responsibility and preventing a tragedy before it happens.

"These are precisely the types of bikes we need to identify, challenge and, where the law permits, get off our roads and away from situations where they could put young people and the public at risk," a spokesperson added.
