Temporary closures planned at recycling centres

Recycling centres in Barnsley are to temporarily close while maintenance work is carried out to improve site safety, the council has said.

The drainage work will be carried out at tips in the borough in phases, to allow residents to use alternative facilities while their nearest one is closed.

The first phase will begin at Smithies Lane Recycling Centre, meaning it will close from 6 August until the end of September.

Councillor Paul Kelly, cabinet spokesperson for environment and highways, said: "These planned drainage improvement works will help protect the environment, improve site safety and ensure our recycling centres continue to operate safely and efficiently".

Barnsley Council said there would be restrictions on recycling for three days before the tip closes, during which time some containers will be removed from the site.

From 3-5 August Smithies Lane will not be able to accept fridges, TVs, household batteries, lead-acid batteries, engine oil, cooking oil, textiles, media items, mixed glass, fluorescent tubes, ink cartridges, coffee pods, gas bottles, paint, vapes, plastics and cans.

Residents will be able to use alternative recycling centres in Goldthorpe, Penistone and Worsbrough, as well as sites in Doncaster.

Further improvement works are planned at other recycling centres across the borough into 2027.

Kelly said: "We understand temporary closures can be inconvenient, and we're committed to giving residents as much notice as possible.

"We'd like to thank residents for their patience and understanding while these essential improvements are carried out."
